It is with immense pleasure that I welcome you to this production of "Patience". The members of the Society have, I know, put a great deal of effort into its preparation in order to offer you a lighthearted and happy evening. I am, regrettably, unable to attend the performance personally, but my best wishes are with you and the cast as you share this delightful experience.

Musical Note
In his lifetime, Arthur Sullivan regarded his operas, written with libretti by W.S. Gilbert, as something of a sideline. He even considered at times that he was frittering away his talents on light theatre, when he should have been concentrating his efforts on 'serious' music. This was an opinion shared by many of his contemporaries. A hundred years later this appears somewhat ironical since his serious works have mostly fallen into neglect. It is also worth noting that Gilbert's works outside of his collaborations with Sullivan are, likewise, barely recognized today. It is one of the anomalies of British culture, that these two artists, unremarkable, by the highest standards, should come together to create such a lasting and worthwhile phenomenal as 'G&S'. In each of the operas, Sullivan seems somehow, to have caught the mood and atmosphere of Gilbert's setting, and the present satire (Patience) on the 'aesthetic' movement of Wilde, Swinburne and Whistler, is no exception.
