J Mark Pim

Question: What do you get when you combine a computer scientist with a musician with a strange (i.e. both terrible and filthy) sense of humour?

Answer: Mark Pim.

Unlike most people who join the society, Mark was already a G&S fan when he arrived at uni. Since being in the chorus for Iolanthe 2003, he has played many roles including Mr. Banks in Mary Poppins, the Duke of Plaza-Toro in The Gondoliers, Scynthius in Princess Ida, Colonel Calverly in Patience and Richard in Ruddigore.

Mark was chair from 2005-06, and presided over a committee whose meetings at times reflected his sense of humour, so much so that one set of minutes had to be heavily edited in case the university authorities wanted to see them!

He also directed The Pirates of Penzance and was musical director for Kaleidoshow, the 2008 summer show, (W) and most recently for Mikado 09 and You Can't Stop The Beat. He has returned to the cast as Sir Marmaduke Pointdextre in The Sorcerer 2010.

Mark knows far more than is healthy about G&S and is prone to quote at random from the shows or the film Topsy Turvy for no readily apparent reason. If you believe that this has happened while you are talking to him, the safest thing to do is to smile and nod. Or run away, in case he makes what he'd call a joke.
